What this check tells you

Reader impact, not spec compliance

EPUBCheck looks for spec violations. This tool looks for the things that are perfectly valid yet still break on a reader’s device.

Vertical-writing breakage on Kindle

Missing vertical-writing settings, single digits that lie on their side — detected from symptoms seen in the wild.

Ruby and digit orientation

Checks whether phonetic guides reach the reader in a usable form and whether digits face the same way as the text around them.

Table of contents, cover, metadata

No cover on the shelf, a table of contents that goes nowhere, an empty author field — the things readers notice first.

EPUBs from any tool

It does not have to be made with EPUB FACTORY. Any .epub file on your device can be loaded.

Your file is never uploaded

The whole analysis runs in your browser. We hold other people’s manuscripts here, so this rule is even stricter than on the conversion side.

How it works — 3 steps

1

Pick an EPUB

Drop a .epub file or choose one. Nothing is uploaded.

2

Run the check

The file is opened in your browser. The tool first works out what kind of book it is — vertical or horizontal, text or images — and then applies only the checks that fit.

3

Read the results and fix

For every finding you get where it is, what readers will experience, and how to fix it. Results can be exported as text.

Your file never leaves your device

This feature handles other people’s manuscripts, which is exactly why we hold the line even harder here than on the conversion side.

🔒The EPUB is opened and analysed on your device, in your browser
🔒The file is never uploaded to any server
🔒The results are not stored on a server either
🔒The operator cannot view the contents of your manuscript

Frequently asked questions

QHow is this different from EPUBCheck?
EPUBCheck asks whether the file violates the specification. This tool asks whether readers will suffer. A real example: an EPUB produced by EPUB FACTORY had zero errors in EPUBCheck 5.1.0, yet single-digit numbers still lay on their side on a Kindle. Being valid and being readable are two different things, so treat this as a companion to EPUBCheck, not a replacement.
QCan I check EPUBs made with other tools?
Yes. It does not need to come from EPUB FACTORY — any .epub file on your device can be loaded.
QIs my file uploaded?
No. The ZIP is opened and read entirely inside your browser; neither the file nor the results are sent to a server.
QIs it free? Do I need an account?
It is free, and there is no sign-up and nothing to install.
QWhat does it actually check?
19 checks, covering how the file is assembled, book metadata, table of contents and links, vertical-writing settings, ruby, digit orientation, Kindle-specific display, image order and size, and chapter splitting.
QWill it claim a horizontal book is missing vertical settings?
No. It first determines the nature of the book — vertical or horizontal, text or images — and applies only the checks that apply. When that determination is uncertain, the check is skipped rather than guessed.
QCan I keep the results?
Yes. You can export them as a text file and use it as a fix-it checklist.
