EPUB FACTORY (EPUB工房), a free web tool that converts manga, art books, photo books, novels and other manuscripts into EPUB 3.0 e-book files without any sign-up or installation, is now available. All conversion runs inside the user's own browser, and manuscripts are never sent to a server.
EPUB FACTORY loads a Python runtime compiled to WebAssembly (Pyodide) into the browser and performs the entire conversion on the user's own device. Images, manuscripts and the generated EPUB files are never uploaded to or stored on the operator's servers, so unreleased manuscripts and commercial submission data can be handled without entrusting them to an external service.
The service was built by an individual developer with a background in e-book distribution, with the aim of making the work of preparing submission data smaller for independent creators. Having to install and learn dedicated software, and the concern of uploading unreleased manuscripts to an external service, were both seen as barriers — and the service is designed to remove both.
This is the first release. Upcoming work focuses on typesetting for vertical Japanese novels, including ruby, emphasis dots and tate-chu-yoko.
